Japan’s Sakurajima volcano has erupted. This was reported by the Japanese portal 373News on Wednesday, February 8.
The eruption was reported in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima on the island of Kyushu.
“On the morning of February 8, a moderate or large volcanic plume erupted in the Showa Sakurajima crater in Kagoshima City,” the report said.
According to the Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory, the height of the plume is 1000 m.
Sakurajima volcano erupted for the first time since April 2, 2018.
On February 6, the Ebeko volcano in the Kuril Islands reportedly spewed ash 3 km high. The plume extended to a distance of 5 km. In mid-November 2016, the volcano was noted to have become more active.
Earlier in the day, volcanologists in Sakhalin recorded ash ejection from the mouth of the Chikurachki volcano up to 4.5 km high. Chikurachki volcano is located on the island of Paramushir in the northern group of the Kuril Islands. Scientists have warned that Chikurachka’s volcanic activity may continue and ash emissions may rise to a height of 6 km. In this regard, the volcano has been assigned an “Orange” aviation hazard code, as the danger to low-altitude aviation aircraft is high.
