nBornnon this date in 1813, Duarte helped inspire the 1844 Dominican War ofnIndependence, and he helped finance it, too. However, when thenDominicans succeeded in their efforts to set up an independentnnation, Duarte found himself disagreeing with the republic’s firstnpresident, Pedro Santana. As a matter of fact, Duarte found himselfndisagreeing with a lot of the elites who wanted to control the newnnation.

nAfternfunding the fight for independence, Duarte was ruined financially.nAnd after striving to found the nation, Duarte found himself exilednfrom it again and again. Santana was a tyrannical leader – henwanted to control people in a very un-democratic way – and othernmonied and powerful figures wanted to keep their power andntraditions, thank you very much. So Duarte, with his idealism andnliberal ideas, had to go.

nDuarte even died in exile!

nButnDuarte was and is a hero and even a martyr in the eyes ofnDominicans, and his democratic ideals havenbecome a guiding principle for his nation.
