nToday’s theme – huggingnone another to lift each other’s spirits and show affection – wasnpositioned sorta-kinda halfway between the end of the Christmas andnNew Years holidays and Valentine’s Day.

n

n

n

nFor us Northern Hemispherentypes, it can be a time of short, dark, stormy days, and the founder of the holiday (Kevin Zaborney) thought it was a great time to try to bring warmthnand cheer into our lives.

n

n

n

n

nI would suggest changingnthe name of the day from “National Hugging Day” to “InternationalnHugging Day,” since the day has become popular in many otherncountries, from Canada and Guam to Australia and Bulgaria.

nDid you know that huggingnis physically good for you?

n

    n

  • nAn long hug can boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is an importantn chemical that lifts your mood and makes you happy.

    n

  • n

  • nHugsn also boost oxytocin levels. That chemical is called the “loven chemical”; it’s important to healing negative emotions such asn loneliness and anger.

    n

  • n

  • nTheren is evidence that hugging reduces stress, reduces blood pressure,n improves immune function (so you get fewer colds or other viruses,n and if you do get a cold, it tends to go away faster), and improvesn pain tolerance.
