The vernal equinox, traditionally celebrated on March 21st, marks the official beginning of spring. As we embrace this season of renewal, let’s delve into the rich tapestry of Indian history and culture.
My Indian wall serves as a visual tribute to this fascinating country. It features a detailed map of India and Ceylon, accompanied by three vintage postcards brought back from the subcontinent by one of my ancestors, likely my grandfather or his brother. Both served in the British Army during World War I, leaving a lasting legacy of their experiences through these postcards.
One postcard showcases the bustling interior of Rawal Pindi railway station, a significant military garrison during British India. Another depicts a “Jirga,” a political meeting of tribesmen held under Gurkha guard. My grandfather’s tales of serving alongside these formidable soldiers have instilled a deep respect for the Gurkhas within me.
The third postcard features Afghan peace delegates from 1919, reminding us of the enduring nature of political negotiations.
Adding to the visual narrative, I’ve incorporated a circular wooden carving of a temple, reminiscent of the Taj Mahal, and an embroidered hanging depicting Lord Shiva. These artifacts, along with a fly-whisk acquired years ago, enrich the overall aesthetic of my Indian wall.
As time goes on, I anticipate expanding this collection, further deepening my connection to India’s vibrant history and culture.
