A Hare-Brained Idea: Reviving a Forgotten Bedroom

Introduction:

Have you ever heard the phrase “First, catch your hare”? While often attributed to Hannah Glasse, it’s actually a much older saying that emphasizes the importance of achieving the first step before moving on to the next. This perfectly captures the essence of our home renovation project: before we can embark on a grand makeover, we must first address the underlying issues.

Assessing the Damage:

Let’s take a closer look at the bedroom in question. Tom, the previous occupant, had started the redecoration process but had left it unfinished. The walls were stripped, the plaster was loose, and the chimney breast was a sorry sight. It was clear that this room needed some serious TLC.

Deciding on the Approach:

One option was to restore the brickwork, re-plaster the wall, and wallpaper it. However, considering the time, effort, and cost involved, I decided that this wasn’t the most practical solution. The room was going to be covered up with new materials, so why invest in a cosmetic fix that would be hidden from view?

The Chimney Breast Dilemma:

The chimney breast presented a particular challenge. The previous owner had removed the brickwork to accommodate a bunk bed, leaving a gaping hole that had been hastily covered with plasterboard. This makeshift repair was not only unsightly but also structurally unsound.

A New Plan:

Rather than restoring the brickwork, I decided to take a more pragmatic approach. I would build a frame around the chimney breast and cover it with new materials. This would conceal the damage while also providing a solid foundation for the new look.

Stay tuned for the next installment of this home renovation series, where I’ll delve into the details of building the frame and selecting the perfect cladding material to transform this forgotten bedroom into a cozy and inviting space.
