Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has announced his retirement from the French national team.
“I think the team is ready to continue playing without me. There is a goalkeeper who is ready to replace me (Mike Maignan). I prefer to leave at the peak than to wait for the speed to drop or there is too much competition. I also feel the need to spend more time with my wife and children “, – said Lloris in an interview with L’Equipe.
Lloris is 36 years old. He has been playing for the national team since 2008 and holds the record for the number of matches played – 145 games. He also holds the record for the number of meetings in the world championships among goalkeepers (20). During his career, the goalkeeper became the world champion (2018), the silver medalist of the World Cup (2022) and Europe (2016), the winner of the UEFA Nations League (2020/21). At club level, Lloris has been playing for Tottenham since 2012.
