A fire broke out, around 9 pm this Monday, in a building in the vicinity of Hospital de Sao Jose, in Lisbon. There are no injuries but 24 people were displaced.
As JN found out, the fire broke out at number 21 on Calçada Nova do Colégio, a three-story building.
The flames destroyed the roof of the building , which was left uninhabitable, a source from the Fire Sappers Regiment told Lusa. “The cover was completely destroyed, so the rain comes in”, explained commander Tiago Lopes.
By 10 pm, the fire was already under control, followed by the aftermath phase, and there were no reports of injuries, he added.
Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon, told journalists at the scene that 24 people were left homeless , but underlined that ” there are no injuries “, also praising the “quick response” given by the means of assistance, namely the Regiment of Sappers , in the face of “an operation that we did not expect”.
The mayor said that in the building there were residents and “people who were in local accommodation” and guaranteed accommodation for all those affected. “People are not going to be homeless. We are going to resolve the situation”, he stressed.
For the operations, 47 operators were deployed, supported by 13 vehicles.
At the origin of the fire it is suspected that there may have been a fireplace.
