nToday commemorates the first skirmish in the War of Independence in Angola. On this date in 1961 forces calling themselves the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola attacked a prison and successfully freed independence leaders who had been held there.

n

n

n

nThis uprising was the beginning of a 15-year (15! Years!!! Yikes!!!!!) struggle for independence from Portugal.

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

nThe bad news: Angola is not high on the democracy scale, or the human rights scale.

n

n

n

nThe good news: it has been pretty stable since 2002.

n

n

n

nThe bad news: the standard of living is pretty low.

n

n

n

nThe good news: the economy is one of the fastest growing in the world, and the nation has some pretty good mineral resources.

n

n

n

nThe bad news: People are probably not going to be able to farm this land:

nThe good news: The Valley of the Moon is a tourist attraction – and very beautiful!
