nOnnthe flag there is a white waxing crescent moon, which indicatesnTurkic and Islamic ties and symbolizes hope for the future, and fivenwhite stars to represent the five provinces of the nation. Mostnnoticeably, there are five carpet guls, which are designs used innproducing rugs, over two crossed olive branches, which represent thenpeaceful nature of the Turkmen people.

n

n

n

nThenfive carpet designs represent the five major tribes of the nation:nTeke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur, and Arsary.

n

nInnthe past, Turkmen rugs were made by nomadic peoples using the naturalnmaterials they could find in the ares, such as wool from their sheepnand natural dyes from minerals and plants. The Turkmen createdngeometrical designs. “Irregularities” were common, becausennatural dyes vary from batch to batch, and because the rugs sometimesnstretch when you are always folding up your loom and carting itnaround from camp to camp. But it is those irregularities that addednto the handmade charm, many collectors agreed.

n

n

n

nNownthere are some large rug workshops in the cities of Turkmenistan.nRugs created there often use synthetic (human-made) as well asnnatural dyes, and they have many fewer irregularities.

n

n

n

nAlso, nthere are large numbers of tugs manufactured in Pakistan and Iran andnexported under the name of “Turkmen rugs.” They generally havenlittle in common with the original Turkmen rugs.

n

n

n

nTurkmenistannactually has a Ministry of Carpets, which tries to preserve thentraditions of carpet weaving by hand and works on restoration of oldncarpets and old looms. Also, there is a Turkmen Carpet Museum withnabout 2,000 exhibits, including of course rare and antique carpets.
