nThenalmond has been a favorite food since ancient times. It’s actuallynconsidered a “super food” because it is so healthy: almondsnprovide fiber, protein, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, calcium, andneven iron!

n

n

n

nResearchersnsay that evidence suggests that eating most nuts, such as almonds, nmay reduce the risk of heart disease and regulate blood pressure.nThey can make you feel full, compared to other foods with similarnnumbers of calories, and therefore they can control your hungernpangs.

n

n

n

nAlmondnoil and almond milk can help your skin and hair, even!

n

n

n

nAndnof course almonds are soooooooo yummy. Almond is even one of mynfavorite smells in things like liquid soaps, shampoos, and candles!

n

n

n

nHerenare some great ways to eat almonds:

n

n

n

nWholenalmondsnmake great snacks. You can probably find them raw, roasted, salted, nunsalted, and flavored. For example, Blue Diamond sells whole almondsnin the following flavors:

n

    n

  • nsaltn ‘n’ vinegar

    n

  • n

  • nhoneyn Dijon

    n

  • n

  • nsriracha

    n

  • n

  • nhabanero

    n

  • n

  • njalpenon smokehouse

    n

  • n

  • nwasabin & soy sauce

    n

  • n

  • nhoneyn roasted

    n

  • n

  • nsmokehouse

    n

  • n

  • ntoastedn coconut

    n

  • n

n

n

n

nAlmondnmilk is a delicious substitute for cow’s milk or soy milk.

n

n

n

nMarzipannand other forms of almond paste are often a yummy part of candynor baked goods. Marzipan is easy and fun to roll or pinch into anvariety of shapes. Making teeny tiny marzipan fruits is traditional, nbut some people make figures out of marzipan. My question is…donthey then EAT them????

n

n

n

n

n

n

(I’d rather eat marzipan snowmen than marzipan babies!)

n

n

n

n

n

nSlicednalmonds are super yummy in cereals and salads, and as a coatingnfor a cheese ball or a cake.

n

n

n

n

n
n

n

n

nSliverednalmonds are my favorite way to add a nutty texture to greennbeans.

n

n

n

n

n

n

n
n

nChopped almonds are great in cookies and sweet breads.

n

n

nAlmondnextract is my go-to flavoring for many desserts. I make sure toninclude plenty of almond extract in my spritz cookies, and I oftennfrost many or even most of the cookies with homemade buttercreamnfrosting with a delicious dollop of almond flavoring! Yummers!

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

nBynthe way…

n

n

n

nEvennthough almonds have been eaten and enjoyed in so many places in thenworld, throughout history, my own state of California produces ansurprisingly large percent of the world’s supply. n

n

n

n

nI’mntalking 80%!

n

n

n

nYep,nthe U.S. is by far the largest commercial supplier of almonds in thenworld, and California is responsible for pretty much all ofnthe U.S. commercial crop! n

n

n

n

n

n

nUnfortunately, nlast year’s drought affected the California almond supply andnaffected prices worldwide. And demand for almonds is going up and upn– even though prices are higher. n

n

n

n

nAustralianand Spain are the two nations that follow the U.S. (California) innproduction…but get a load of these numbers:

n

n

n

nU.S.A.n- 1.8 million tonnes of almonds n

n

nAustralian– 0.16 million tonnes of almonds n

n

nSpainn– 0.15 million tonnes of almonds n
