Here is the draft of the ICC’s position paper which basically recommends that India, England and Australia should form an “Executive Committee” which will act “as the sole recommendation committee (like any of the other ICC committees) on all constitutional, personnel, integrity, ethics, development and nominations matters, as well as distributions from the ICC”.
Rarely has a single sentence encompassed such a massive power grab. Curiously, two paragraphs later, the authors assert that “as such no Member will lose any of their current voting power”.
Read on. The ICC has prostrated itself at the soggy, smelly altar of supply side economic theory. Accordingly, don’t expect logical consistency from one paragraph to the next. Goal posts shift not just a little, but across entire football grounds from time to time. Here are a couple of samples:
1. The idea is to strengthen Test cricket by making it possible for fewer countries to actually play it.
2. The idea is to strengthen “nation v nation” cricket, by creating larger windows for franchise based cricket.
This is dangerous, not because it will make the ECB, CA and BCCI stronger and richer, but because in the long run, it will make them and the game they claim to want to run weaker.
