Scientists have discovered a secret realm of unknown creatures beneath the water, the likes of which have never been seen before on Earth. The underwater world has long surprised us and is thought to be an entirely separate planet from ours.

The ecosystem was discovered under hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise in Central America by scientists aboard the research vessel Falkor using a robotic arm to probe the seafloor layers.
Mysterious undersea kingdoms, proof of extraordinary creature life
Hydrothermal vents were discovered in 1977 by scientists while studying the East Pacific Ridge, a tectonic plate boundary near the Galapagos Islands off the west coast of South America. There, vents shaped like molten wax totems rise 35 to 40 feet (10 to 12 meters) above the waters, spewing hot, mineral-rich water.
Despite the incredibly high temperatures around the vents, which reached up to 694 degrees Fahrenheit (368 degrees Celsius), the scientists discovered food chains teeming with chemobacteria, gastropods, crustaceans, and worms, which were supported by the rich nutrients streaming out of the vents.
But, before now, no scientist had considered looking through these windows to discover a new planet. According to the Ocean Institute, which conducted the expedition into the habitat, “the discovery of a secret world and a new ecosystem hidden beneath another ecosystem provides fresh evidence of life in incredible places.”
“We have long known a lot about animals that live on land and in underground cavities, as well as creatures that live in sand and mud in the deep oceans,” said Jyotika Virmani, executive director of the Schmidt Institute, of the fascinating discovery. Scientists were seeking for life under hydrothermal vents for the first time.”
How did this hidden planet come to be discovered?
Scientists used a robotic arm to sweep the ocean floor before placing boxes over faults in the Earth’s crust as part of the operation. When the researchers examined inside the boxes later, they found a significant number of organisms under the openings, showing that the critters came from the seafloor.
Researchers were drawn to the gigantic tube worm (Riftia pachyptila) as one of these oceanic species. A couple of these creature’s offspring can be observed above the valves. The discovery of these organisms led scientists to believe that the larvae are migrating to new habitats inside the volcanic fluids beneath the sea.
“The discovery of a secret world of unknown creatures beneath the sea has greatly expanded our understanding of animal life in deep-sea hydrothermal vents,” Monica Bright, an ecologist at the University of Vienna who worked on the trip, said in a statement.
In this dynamic world, there are two habitats, where species survive in peace above and below the surface, relying on the vent fluid from below and the oxygen in the ocean from above.
The researchers will continue to study this fragile and mysterious ecosystem, which is vulnerable to the effects of planned deep-sea exploration operations in the Pacific Ocean, after publishing their complete findings later this year.
“Discoveries made on each of the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s expeditions reinforce the urgency of fully exploring the ocean so we can know what lies beneath the sea,” said Wendy Schmidt, president and co-founder of the Schmidt Ocean Institute, in a statement.
