nOn this date in 1848, Iowa became the 29th state. Nicknamed the Hawkeye State, Iowa is sort of a middle/medium state. Not only is it near the middle of the pack as far as gaining statehood, it is near the middle of the country, geographically speaking, and it is the 26th largest state in area and 30th most populous state.

nIowa is also in the middle of the Corn Belt! It is #1 in corn production in the U.S., and the U.S. is #1 in corn production in the world. So, as far as corn goes, Iowa is FAR from a middle/medium state!

nHere are some amazing things to see in Iowa:

nThe Shrine of the Grotto of the Redemption is an enormous collection of gems, semi-precious stones, other minerals, petrifications (things like petrified wood) and fossils, and shells have been gathered into one place in order to create nine grottos that tell the Christian stories of Jesus’s life.
