nShe is the most famous female painter in Slovenia’s history.

nAnd she helped form Slovene identity.

nIvana Koblica, who was born on this date in 1861, lived in many different places, but it so happens that both her birth and death were in Ljubljana. When she was born, Ljubljana was a part of the Austrian Empire. When she died, it was a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes – and that kingdom was later named the more familiar Yugoslavia.

nNow Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia.

nBut, like I said, Koblica lived in a lot of other places: Vienna (Austria), Munich (Germany), Paris (France), Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and Berlin (also Germany). These days, her works are on display in many different galleries in many different European cities.

nKoblica’s style was realism. She painted in oils and pastels, and she painted all sorts of things – portraits, still life and floral paintings, religious scenes, and more. She is most famous for her pictures of people in either city or country settings, going about their daily lives.
