nIt’snpretty famous as a ultra-modern, mega-rich city of skyscrapers andnsports venues – such as the indoor ski park pictured below!
n
n
nDidnyou know that the city of Dubai is in the country called United ArabnEmirates (UAE)? It is the most populous city and emirate in thennation. Size-wise, it is the second largest emirate – only thencapital, Abu Dhabi, is larger.
n
n
nSo,nyou may be wondering what an emirate is. It is basically the samenthing as a principality—a territory ruled by an emir (in the casenof the UAE) or prince (in the case of European principalities). Emirsnand princes are, as you know, hereditary positions—you have to benborn a prince; the people do not elect you to the position! n
n
nThenUAE is a federation of seven emirates, and the seven emirs form thenFederal Supreme Council for the entire nation. Together, they electnone of the seven to serve as the President of the UAE.
n
nThisnnation is pretty wealthy because of its petroleum and natural gasnreserves. However, unlike many of its neighbors on the Arabiannpeninsula, the UAE has quite a bit of economic diversity and angrowing tourism industry. Dubai attracts businesses, business travel, nand travel-for-pleasure.
n
nInwas surprised to read that Emirati citizens make up only 17% – lessnthan one-fourth! – of the population. Most of the citizens arenSouth Asian (Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi) – thatngroup accounts for almost 60%. n

nHerenare some of the more unusual things that visitors to Dubai can try:
