nToday is National Mutt Day

n

n

n

nWhatnis a mutt? n

n

n
n

n

nIt’sna mongrel dog.

n

n
n

n

nUm…okay,nI’ll bite. What’s a mongrel dog?

n

n
n

n

nIt’sna dog of mixed breeds or unknown pedigree. (A pedigree is the recordnof descent of an animal that proves that it is purebred.)

n

n
n

n

nThendogs that you find at animal shelters and at the Humane Society arengenerally “mutts.” Although having a purebred dog is very, verynimportant to some people, other people love their mutts! Today is thenday to celebrate them.

n

n
n

n

nSomenpeople will celebrate the day by going to an animal shelter andnselecting a mutt to take home and adopt into their family. Some willnshare photos and stories about their beloved pets—perhaps on thenNational Mutt Day Facebook page—and some people will donatenmoney to shelters.

Some people have started
dog shows especially
for mutts. Here is a dog
that took one of the prizes
at such a show!

nBreedingnv. no breeding…

n

n

n
nn

nManynanimals and plants have been carefully bred, with controllednreproduction to select for desired traits such as long floppy earsn(beagles) or plump, sweet kernels (corn). Breeding dogs and farmnanimals and other pets and crops has been going on for centuries. Andnof course you can see the results in such breeding by thenbreathtaking variation of dogs with a range of sizesnfrom 4 to 43 inches tall

n

n

n

nPeoplentend to think that doing the same sort of intentional breeding withnpeople is a bad thing, but of course people do select their matesnaccording to the traits they like, such as honesty and kindness andnsunny smiles.

n

n

n

nBut sometimes the words bred and breedingnare used with people, in sentences like these:

n

n
n

n

n “Youncan tell that Jennifer has good breeding.”

n

n “Marknis a well-bred lawyer.”

n

n “Thatnboy has no breeding.”

n

n

n

n
n

n

nInnthese cases, we aren’t really talking about genetics; instead, we arencommenting on upbringing. In other words, we are saying that Jennifernand Mark have good manners and seem to have been raised by goodnparents, but “that boy” is ill-mannered and probably wasn’tnraised well.
