December 18, 2012 – International Migrants Day

n

n

n

nAnmigrant can be defined as someone who has had to leave his or herncountry to work (or to seek work).

n
n

nThisnword is also used for someone who moves around in his or her ownncountry to follow work such as the seasonal harvesting of crops (anmigrant worker).

nGotnit!

n

n
n

n

nThenfirst definition is slightly different than the word immigrant;nan immigrant is someone who moves to another country tonsettle—or live permanently. And the second definition is slightlyndifferent than the word nomad; a nomad is a member of annentire community of people who move from one place to another rathernthan settling in one spot. n

n

n
n

n

nSimilarnwords include emigrant, emigre, expatriate, nitinerant, and displaced person! They all have similarndefinitions but slightly different connotations—that is, they evokendifferent ideas or feelings. For example, I think nomad soundsnexotic and perhaps historical, whereas itinerant just soundsnkind of homeless and sad.

n

n

nOkay,nnow I’m confused!

n

n
n

n

nIt’snsimple. People sometimes leave their country, or their native regionnof their country, in order to find work. They are often callednmigrants or migrantnworkers. And no matter why people become migrants—whether theynhad to move because of lack of opportunity or natural disaster or warnor disease—they are human beings just like you and me, and theynshould be treated as such. n

n

n
n

n

nAndnthat’s what this United Nations day is all about.

n

n
n

n

nGotnit!

n

n
n

n

nWencan recognize the contributions migrants make to their home and hostncountries, and of course we should respect their human rights! Do younknow about any migrants in your nation or region?
