nBonairenand nearby islands used to be called “las Islas de los Gigantes”n– the Islands of the Giants!

n

n
n

n

nNownthose islands are called, variously, the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, nand Curacao), the Netherlands Antilles (until that country dissolvednin 2010), and the BES Islands (Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba).nBonaire is considered a municipality of the Kingdom of thenNetherlands, and so many Dutch people live there.

n

n
n

n

nKnowingnthe Dutch people, I was imagining that many of the inhabitants ofnBonaire are very tall. (The Dutch people are, on average, some of thentallest people in the world.) I asked my daughter, who has been tonBonaire, and she confirmed: oh, yes, a LOT of the people walkingnaround in Bonaire are very tall Dutch people. It’s strange that thenold name would be so appropriate now…

n

n
n

n

n…Sincenthe old name pertained to a people who were completely killed off anlong time ago!

n
n

nThenCaquetio people lived on Bonaire and the other ABC islands before thenSpaniards first discovered the islands in 1499. They had apparentlyntraveled to the islands from what is now called Venezuela, in SouthnAmerica – seventeen miles across the sea in canoes hollowed out ofnlogs.

n

n
n

n

nAtnthat first Caquetio-Spaniard contact, the native people had onlynStone Age technology, with no metal tools or weapons. There were verynmany islanders – probably only 500 or 600. The Cauetio were nonmatch for the Spanish colonizers—who were, after all, about tonconquer the mighty Aztec Empire! The Spaniards didn’t kill all thenCaquetio people right away, but they did something almost as bad—theyntook the people from their homes and sent them to another islandn(Hispaniola) to work in their new mines.

n

n
n

n

nInnother words, the Spaniards enslaved the Caquetio people.
