nFirst, nthere were many different nations of native peoples, including thenfive nations of the Iroquois Confederacy.
n
n
n
nThen, nthere were 13 British colonies, each with their own slightlyndifferent flavor, based on who had settled them, when and why.
n
n
n
nAtnlast, there was just one nation – the United States of America. Thenbrand new nation had won its Revolutionary War against Britain –nand so on the date of the war’s end, there was a new nation with 13nstates…right?
n
n
n
nNotnso fast…There was a failed attempt at a national structure undernthe Articles of Confederation, and then there was a ConstitutionalnConvention, with lots of discussion, debate, and even arguments. Andnthen there was the process of each of the 13 colonies-would-be-statesndeciding whether or not to ratify the finished Constitution.
n
n
n
nIt’snonly natural that some states voted to ratify more quickly thannothers. Pennsylvania, it turns out, became State # 2 when it vote tonratify the Constitution on this date in 1787.
