nBeforenThe Milestone Mo-tel opened on this day in 1925, there were already plentynof hotels all over the world, renting rooms to travelers ornvisitors—but nobody had ever heard of a motel before. That’snbecause the builder of The Milestone Mo-tel, Arthur Heineman, coinedn(invented) the word motel tonbe short for motor hotel—a stop designed for people driving fromnone city to another. Heineman built his motel halfway between SannLuis Obispo and Los Angeles, in California. Guests could rent 2-roomnbungalows, complete with kitchens and garages for their cars, fornjust $1.25!!! There was a courtyard, pool, and picnic tables forneveryone to use.
