D-Link Omna Review: A Decent Security Camera

The new D-Link Omna is available at the price of 200 dollars. This is a fine security camera, and delivers prompt motion alerts and stores activity locally on a microSD card.

Moreover, the new D-Link Omna is also considered to be the first camera that has the ability to work with Appleโ€™s smart home platform, known as HomeKit.

Of course, this integration is a good thing for the iOS 10 software, but Appleโ€™s smart home platform still has far fewer integrations than other competitors on the market, for example Amazon Alexa.

With the new D-Link Omna, customers will be able to set up automations within Appleโ€™s Home app that link the motion inside the security camera. Unfortunately, customers will not benefit from a large number of features here.

So, the downside is that the new D-Link Omna has several limitations. It is not something revolutionary for users to have the ability to see Omna cameraโ€™s live feed from Appleโ€™s Home app.

Several security camera apps on the market offer this kind of possibility. Of course, not from Appleโ€™s HomeKit app, but from their own apps.

We must say that the new D-Link Omna is considered to be more like a niche camera, one that only shines for HomeKit adapters who donโ€™t mind waiting for better integrations.

Letโ€™s try to find out more about the new D-Link Omna. This security camera comes with a light silver-gray finish and a tall cylindrical design. Customers will have access to a microSD card slot situated on the bottom.

To be added that the new D-Link Omna supports up to a 128GB microSD card, which is not included into the box. This means that people will have to buy their own microSD. However, it is a good thing to know that this camera can go up to such big external memory.

Overall, the new D-Link Omna is a fine looking camera, but the companyโ€™s hardware choices donโ€™t make it very attractive.

The new D-Link Omna also has some serious competitors on the market. We are talking about the Nest Cam Indoor.

This camera has an extremely thoughtful layout. The Nest Cam comes with a durable and flexible magnetic base that rotates with ease. Moreover, people will be able to separate the camera from its base for a more permanent wall-mount installation.

So, this means that Nestโ€™s design is very useful and offers more usability compared with the new D-Link Omna.

To be added that compared with the Nest Cam Outdoor, D-Linkโ€™s new camera design is much less modular. This means that it doesnโ€™t come with a flexible base, and people donโ€™t have the option of mounting the camera to a wall.

This is a huge minus, especially because there are several security cams on the market that offer this kind of design possibility.

However, people will be able to put the new D-Link Omna on a flat surface, which is better than nothing.

In the end, we must say that aside from the cameraโ€™s 1080p high-definition video streaming resolution, this new camera also offers a 180-degree field of view. This feature is probably the new D-Link Omnaโ€™s best-selling point.
