A terrific vintage Shaw Brothers action film, directed by King Hu, and a clear generic model. Star Pei-pei Cheng appeared in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as the villainess Jade Fox, but here plays Golden Swallow – how’s that for a porn star name? – an ass-kicking minx sent by her governor father to rescue her brother from a nasty bunch of criminals, aided in her search by Drunken Cat (Hua Yueh), fond of booze and singing really bad songs, except that he’s actually a martial arts master in disguise. The ropey FX are funny, but the fights are superb and the characters fun. Demerits for bad musical sequences.
