CHALLENGER 7 Songs, Albums, Reviews, Biography & More

Upon the demise of the Sydney indie outfit Front End Loader, bassist Richard Corey and drummer Peter Kostic got together with guitarist Greg Hitchcock (ex-You Am I) and front man Ian Underwood (ex-Kryptonics) in 1994. Assembled as the power-pop outfit Challenger 7, the group released a six track EP ‘Morris’ before the group even played their first show, but after only three gigs the band split. Underwood assembled a second version of the band adding drummer Marty Doo (ex-Glide) and bassist Dan Bell (ex-The Scruffs). Challenger 7’s follow-up EP, ‘The Great Slump Forward’, came out in 1996. Adding guitarist Stewie Cunningham (ex-Brother Brick, Asteroid B612) in 1997, Challenger 7 was a rocking four piece that delivered trashy, but meaningful slices of power pop and who developed into one of the country’s most powerful live acts. They released the album ‘Payola’ in 2000 on Tomboy Records. The band has featured on several compilations worldwide.
