The merger of Shoney’s and Danner Foods was finalised in 1971, and the combined business was given the name Shoney’s Big Boy Enterprises by Danner and his co-founder of Shoney’s, Alex Schoenbaum.
Danner served as the company’s president in 1975, the year it announced the rebranding of Mr. D’s Seafood and Hamburgers as “Captain D’s” and the start of an extensive franchising initiative.
By this time, the chain had 32 outlets and a streamlined menu that concentrated on seafood and sides, bringing in more than $10 million yearly.
After Danner and Schoenbaum sold the Big Boy name to Marriott Corporation in 1976, Shoney’s Inc. rebranded and acquired Captain D’s.
The business expanded quickly in the 1970s and launched unique programmes like the Kids’ Birthday Club and kid-friendly comic books.
The company’s logo and building design changed between the 1980s and 1990s.
