Becoming Jane (2007)
In Austenland, a pleasant movement is offered, the first half-hour confirms the diagnosis, and the script draws from Austen’s writing in showing where Miss Hampshire got her “inspiration”. But as it goes on, it turns from initially unpleasant to a sad grace-note.
The theme of Jane’s life resembles something written by another writer who despised her enlightened logic and romantic wish-fulfillment – Thomas Hardy. Like his work, the film has a somber, remorseless determination.
Particularly effective and subtle is the scene where Austen goes to visit Mrs. Radcliffe, played by the wonderful Helen McCrory, who learns about career fulfillment and subtle nervous breakdowns. Anne Hathaway is excellent, giving a study in gossamer lines. Small, but not worthless.
