nMoldovanis located between Romania and Ukraine, and its location was bothnfortunate and unfortunate in that it was strategically positioned onna trade route between Asia and Europe. The region was made part ofnthe Roman and Byzantine Empires during ancient times, and much laternthe Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. In between, it was invadednagain and again: by Goths and Huns, by Tatars and Turks, bynBulgarians and Mongolians and Magyars and many other groups.

nMoldovanis landlocked (it does not touch any ocean or sea), but it is closenenough to the Black Sea to enjoy a mild, generally sunny climate. n

I think the breakup of thenSoviet Union particularly affected this region, as it experiencednenergy shortages and decreases in industrial and agricultural output.nThe service sector now dominates the economy; the service sectornincludes things like entertainment, computers, communications,nhealth, media, tourism and hospitality, banking, gambling, education,nand law. That sounds like everything, right? What the service sectorndoes NOT include is growing food (farming, ranching), mining, andnmanufacturing goods.
