nBacknin the day, the eldest son was the one who inherited the familynestate…the family fortune…even the crown in royal families!
n
n
n
n
n
nThesendays, in modern European monarchies such as Belgium, Denmark,nLuxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, it is the eldest CHILDnwho inherits the crown, not the eldest son. And, let’s face it, mostnof us do not have thrones or kingdoms or even noble titles to passndown to our children—and many modern families split up whateverninheritance they leave equally between their children.

n
nSondoes that mean that we live in a state of equality about birth order?
n
n
n
n
n
nNo.nNot really.

n
n
n
n
nManynpeople complain that parents tend to treat their firstborn childrennas “more special” and make ambitious leaders out of them becausenthey give them more responsibility and often more attention.
n
n
nManynpeople ALSO complain that parents tend to treat their last children –nyou know, the “baby of the family” – as more special, and thatnthey coddle and spoil them.
n
n
n
n
n
nManynpeople complain that the middle child (or middle children, in largenfamilies) are often ignored or at least passed over.
n
n
n
n
n
nOfncourse, every family is different, and parents are different, andnkids are different—and every time you make a sweepingngeneralization about firstborn, last-born, or middle children, younwill be ignoring millions of counter-examples.
n
n
n
n
n
nStill, nthere’s no harm in having a bit of fun especially focused on thenmiddle child of the family!
n
n
n
nWhich is why someone made today Middle Child’s Day!

nIfn you have a brother or sister who is a middle child, or if you are an parent with a middle child, celebrate him or her! Cards, cakes, evenn small presents are all acceptable. (I want to note here that I am an middle child, and my husband is also a middle child, and we haven NEVER received a National Middle Child Day gift or card. LOL!)
