nThentheme of this year’s International Youth Day is “Youth CivicnEngagement.” It’s all about getting young people to participate innsociety – politically, economically, and socially.
n
n
n
nUnfortunately, nright now many schools and societies generally seem to be set up tonkeep young people AWAY from participating, except as rather passivenconsumers.
n
n
n
nMost young people in the world are not allowed to vote, nbut many young people are discouraged from engaging in politics innany way – possibly because so many parents and teachers arenconcerned about things such as football wins and test scores.
n
n
n
nSocieties in general put roadblocks in the way of kids startingnbusinesses or getting jobs. And schools generally act to limit theirnstudents’ social lives – keeping kids and teens not onlynpartitioned off from the rest of society, but also keeping kids andnteens of different ages away from each other. n

n
n
n
nWithoutnanyone necessarily trying to limit opportunities for Youth CivicnEngagement, the United Nations states that such opportunities arenoften “low or non-existent.”

nAndnyet most people realize that we want young adults to participatenactively in making money, holding down jobs and starting businesses, ninventing and discovering new things, voting and otherwisenparticipating in government. We have campaigns to register youngnvoters and then, of course, to actually vote. We wring our hands overnyoung adults who can’t or won’t move out of their parents’ homes andnwho can’t or won’t get full-time employment, with benefits. We shakenour heads over the fact that many 20-somethings don’t seem to respectnor even like people who are older or younger than them.
n
n
n
nInnmy opinion, we should encouraging young people to participate in thenwhole of society all through childhood and adolescence – and thennwe will surely have young adults who are more engaged and connected!
n
n
n
nHavingna day to talk about the importance of this can only be a good thing!
