nSyria. Right now, we cannot think about celebrating Syria’s independence from France (the last French soldiers left on this date in 1946) – because our minds are full of the Syrian civil war, the horrifying and needless deaths, the terrible destruction, and all of the refugees. We are angry and sad – and we cannot celebrate.

nLest we forget, the country had – and hopefully still has some, at least – gorgeous buildings and ancient ruins.
