n

n

n

nMargrethe,nMargrethe, come on out, or we will never go home!” call loyalncitizens of Denmark on their queen’s birthday.

n

n

n

nTheyndo this standing below the public balcony of the Royal AmalienborgnPalace. And sure enough, Queen Margrethe and a few members of hernfamily step out onto the balcony and greet the cheering crowd.

n

n

n

nThenfunny thing (to me) is that the tradition dictates that this happennseveral times. After smiling and waving to the crowd, the queen willngo back inside. The crowd will make their traditional call againn(rather like calling to Rapunzel or Juliet, isn’t it?), and she willnstep out again—three or four times altogether.

    Licorice fudge

    n

nLicoricen is a popular flavor for desserts—licorice ice cream, licoricen chocolate, licorice fudge, licorice mints, and of course licoricen candy. The Danes apparently especially like salty black licorice.n (I’m thinking, “Salty??”) You probably cannot find all of thesen licorice treats in your local grocery store, but perhaps you can addn some pieces of licorice to vanilla ice cream.
