Anurag Kashyap quits Twitter after family gets threats online

NEW DELHI: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has deleted his Twitter account, saying he received threats for speaking his mind on the microblogging site. Kashyap, a government critic, wrote late Saturday that he had taken the decision after his parents and daughter began receiving online threats.

“When your parents start calling and your daughter gets Internet threats, you know nobody wants to talk. There will be no reason or reason. Thunder will rule and rogues will be the new way of life. Congratulations to all for this new India and hope you all will prosper, ”Kashyap tweeted around 9.30pm.

“This would be my last tweet when I leave Twitter. When I’m not allowed to speak my mind without fear, I’d rather not speak at all,” read his second tweet.

This is not the first time the filmmaker is targeting trolls. In May this year, he tagged PM Narendra Modi in a tweet, congratulating him on his victory in the election. He also shared a screenshot of a man threatening his daughter and asked Modi.

“Dear @Narendramodi, sir. Congratulations on your victory and thank you for the message of inclusivity. Sir, please also tell us how we treat these your followers who celebrate your victory by threatening my daughter with messages like this that I am your dissenter, “he wrote.

He later filed an FIR against the person who threatened his daughter, and thanked people for their support, citing the prime minister as well.

“Anyway, I want to thank @MumbaiPolice @ MahaCyber1 @Brijeshbsingh for helping me with filing an FIR. Thank you very much for the amazing support and starting the process. Thank you @Dev_Fadnavis and thank you @narendramodi Sir. As a parent I’m safer now, He wrote.

Kashyap was also among the people, along with Mani Ratnam, Aparna Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma, who signed a petition on July 23, to draw the prime minister’s attention to the “growing number of hate crimes” in the country.
