An Old Run Out Which Should Not Have Been

The batsman was Inzamam Ul Haq, the fielder Steve Harmison off his own bowling. The dismissal is from the Faisalabad Test in November 2005. You can see the video of the dismissal in the video below from the 7:0 minute mark. This is from one of Rob Moody’s compilations.

This should not have been given out under Law 38(2)(a)

2. Batsman not Run out
Notwithstanding 1 above, a batman is not out Run out if,
(a) he has been within his ground and has subsequently left it to avoid injury, when the wicket is put down.

As you can see at the 7:55 mark in the video, Inzamam’s back foot is in his crease until he has to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit by Harmison’s (legitimate) throw.

The law was in place even in the 1980 Laws which include the following sentence under Law 38

If, however, a Batsman in running makes good his ground he shall not be out Run Out, if he subsequently leaves his ground, in order to avoid injury, and the wicket is put down.

Inzamam’s situation here is different from Sachin Tendulkar’s in 1999 against Pakistan in the 4th innings at Kolkata. That led to a riot, but the Umpires made the correct decision. In that instance, while there was little doubt that Tendulkar would have reached the crease safely, he was never actually in the crease.
