Study: 79% of Americans Prefer Weight Loss Surgery as a Last Resort

The study conducted by Orlando Health reveals that about 79% of Americans believe weight loss surgery should only be considered as a last resort.

The study, based on a national survey, also found that 60% of respondents view bariatric surgery as a shortcut to weight loss. In the United States, more than two in five adults suffer from obesity.

While bariatric surgery is an effective treatment option, the study highlights common stigmas that may discourage individuals who qualify for surgery from pursuing the treatment they need.

The survey indicates that only 1% of clinically eligible individuals undergo surgical treatment for obesity, and 61% of respondents believe that exercise and diet should be sufficient.

The study emphasizes the importance of personalized treatment plans for obesity, taking into account factors like body mass index and existing medical conditions. The medical director and bariatric surgeon at Orlando Health Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery Institute, Andre Teixeira, emphasizes the success of a personalized approach in reversing health issues caused by obesity.

However, the study suggests that stigma around obesity and bariatric surgery may affect individuals’ decisions and diminish their chances of long-term success in weight loss and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Bariatric surgery is noted to be less invasive and safer than ever due to advancements in laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques.
