Acer Predator Triton 500 – A Gaming Laptop That Can Beat A Gaming Desktop?

Those who say that gaming laptops are overrated and they can never in a 1000 years beat a gaming desktop PC may swallow their words, as Acer with its new Predator Triton 500 claims that it can beat most of the desktop gaming PCs available on the market now.

The Predator Triton 500 comes at a price of $2000, it ways 2kg and comes with an IPS 144Hz G-Sync 1080p 15.6 inch screen.

Inside of the Predator we find an Intel Core I7 8750H, with 6 cores and 12 threads running at 2.2Ghz and max turbo boost of 4.1Ghz having a TDP of just 45W. This CPU can handle everything you can throw at it in both gaming and productivity like video or photo editing, so performance vise the CPU is perfect.

For video processing we have an RTX 2080 Max Q. This video card is actually the desktop RTX 2080 but with its TDP reduced down to half due to its lower running frequencies. Reducing the frequencies meant the TDP went down from 225W to 80W and of course the GPU performance is under a desktop RTX 2080 but still better than any mobile graphics adapter GPU.

To cool all these components the Triton 500 comes equipped with 3 new generation AeroBlade fans, which are very quiet and offer a very good air flow.

Our testing model came with 32GB of DRR4 RAM running at 2666MHz and two 256GB NVME SSD running in raid, but if you have a larger budget you can opt in for two 512GB NVME SSD running in raid.

To test the capabilities of the Acer Predator Triton 500 we ran a few tests like Cinebench 15, BF 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Assassins Creed Odyssey.  All games were tested with ULTRA and High Presets, running at the native resolution of the display, meaning 1080p.

In Cinebench 15 the Predator got 912 points for the multicore test. BF 5 with DXR Off managed to run at an average of 100 FPS, and DXR On the average went down to 55 FPS.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider managed a score of 88 FPS and A.C. Odyssey scored 53 FPS in average.

Conclusion time then

Overall we like the Acer Predator Triton 500, even thought it comes with a hefty price tag of $2000, and we are glad to see that the performance of mobile gaming devices have really increased in the last few years. They increased so much that we can actually play anything we like without making compromises on neither looks or performance of the game and we can even edit videos on these kind of laptops without encountering any issues.
