A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean off the Kuril Islands, the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.
A huge earthquake occurred in the Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The incident in the Russian region was reported on the website of the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Residents of Kamchatka felt the tremor at 18:45 local time (9:45 Moscow time). The epicenter was at a depth of 42 kilometers and 189 kilometers from Severo-Kurilsk.
On February 6, Turkey was hit by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, the country’s strongest since 1939. The epicenter of the disaster is the region of Kahramanmaras province in the south of the country. In the afternoon, a new earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 was recorded in the central part of the country. According to the latest information from the Office of Emergency Situations, 3,381 people died, and more than 20,400 people were injured.
Echo aftershocks from the powerful earthquake wreaked havoc in neighboring Syria’s capital and Lebanon’s Beirut. In Syria, the death toll, according to the latest information, is about 700 people, injured – 1419.
