The day after escaping from the enclosure, four chimpanzees, one of whom was injured, were released at the Swedish Zoo on Thursday. Three more people were shot dead.
According to the Swedish authorities and the media, no one was able to safely enter the building of Furuvik Zoo, and the injured animal was not provided with medical assistance.
The chimpanzees were in the monkey house, but workers were unable to return the three unharmed to their enclosure, the zoo said in a statement. The wounded animal returned to the pen on its own.
The zoo said: “This indicates that we cannot yet allow guests to freely roam the park and that we are currently in a state of maximum readiness.”
The zoo described the incident as “very serious and unfortunate for our animals and our staff” and said it was unclear how the primates managed to escape.
On Wednesday, the animals broke down, prompting the zoo to inform authorities. A fourth monkey was injured after three employees were shot dead. The zoo told the Swedish media that all the animals were not sufficiently euthanized and should be put to death.
