Black Adam (2022) Movie Review
If you enjoy that type of thing, Black Adam is a lot of fun, with a delightfully murderous antihero who puts an irreverent take on the superhero paradigm. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, in a rare villain(ish) role, is allowed loose to unleash destruction with a knowing smile to the camera.
From Black Adam’s skull-crushing entrance to a ludicrously violent parody on the X-Men movies’ super-speed sequences, the picture revels in giving out death and devastation (but in a humorous way). From start to end, including the inevitable post-credits sequence, Black Adam is a guilty pleasure that isn’t even really guilty.
Black Adam, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, will be released in cinemas on Friday, October 21.
Johnson portrays Teth-Adam, the ancient champion of Kahndaq, a perpetually enslaved (fictional) Middle Eastern nation. An opening voice-over tells us about his past, his abilities, and, of course, the mystical superweapon that everyone is after. (It’s the Crown of Something Or Other this time.)
When Adam awakens in the present, he is amused by new-fangled progressive notions such as not melting people into skeletons for looking at him funny. A squad of superheroes known as The Justice Society, as well as an army of mercenaries with unlimited ammunition and a council of demons looking to unleash hell, are ordered to take him down. It should come as no surprise that things get quite noisy very quickly and generally stay that way for two hours.
Johnson plays the eponymous antihero, but this long-awaited film sees a slew of DC Comics characters make the transition from comic book pages to the big screen. Noah Cintineo, Quintessa Swindell, Aldis Hodge, and former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan star as the Justice Society of America, a group of DC comics superheroes you may or may not recognise. Let’s be honest: they’re not in the league of Superman or Spider-Man.
