Battle Beyond the Stars 1980 Movie Review
Planet Akir, besieged by the Malmori Empire and governed by ruthless warlord Sador, is the setting for the film (John Saxon). It’s up to Zed, one of the few remaining Akira Corsairs, to take on the mission. As a result of Nell’s familiarity with Shad (Richard Thomas), a young guy who has previously flown the spacecraft, offers to go on the recruitment expedition. With the arrival of the Hammerhead, Sador destroys Umateal and they are free to flee.
Cayman of the Lazuli, a reptile slaver, kidnaps Nanelia, Shad’s sister. Cayman joins their cause in exchange for the head of Sador, the man responsible for the destruction of Cayman’s homeworld a long time ago. While on Akir, Shad and Co. return, frightening the MalMori into fleeing. Shad, Nanelia, and Saint-Exmin are tasked with destroying Sador’s fleet in retaliation for his attack on Akir, and so they commandeer the Hammerhead.
Detonating Nell’s detonator causes Hammerhead’s Stellar Converter to backfire and collapse. Angered by Mol’s interference, Gelt is able to smash their spacecraft and murder the three of them instantly. No one can genuinely die until they have been loved and cherished by the living, according to the philosophy of Akir’s “Varda,” which Shad shares with Nanelia.
