21 Grams (2003) Film Summary
A sad, intermittently beautiful, wrenching work, brilliantly and invigoratingly structured. As with Alejandro González Iñárritu’s previous Amores Perros, he shows astonishing talent, and also an unfortunate tendency to go on too long and throw too much into the pot, seriously diluting the impact.
Where in Amores Perros that showed in the film’s draggy conclusion, here it was more a sputtering mid-section that was more problematic, and it was asking too much to make a note of La Llorona-worthy grief sustain a whole film, especially this one’s excessivly tall tale. Still, this is ambitious, intense film-making.
This is the story of three gentle persons: Paul Rivers, an ailing mathematician lovelessly married to an English émigré; Christina Peck, an upper-middle-class suburban housewife, happily married and mother of two little girl; and Jack Jordan, an ex-convict who has found in his Christian faith the strength to raise a family. They will be brought together by a terrible accident that will change their lives. By the final frame, none of them will be the same as they will learn harsh truths about love, faith, courage, desire and guilt, and how chance can change our worlds irretrievably – forever.
