Curse stories have grabbed our minds throughout history, despite being dismissed as simple folklore or superstition. However, there have been reports of claimed curses becoming lethal, leaving a path of disaster and unexplained fatalities in their wake. We dive into some of the most terrifying real-life curses that have claimed lives in this article, providing light on the enigmatic and unsettling circumstances that surround them.
Although the ancient Egyptians are well renowned for their alleged curses, people have been cursing items, locations, and even people for as long as we can remember. Most curses are nothing more than words or perhaps rumors, with no real effects. However, here are some verified incidents of real-life curses that took their victims to the grave.
Philip IV of France put the Templars on trial and sentenced them to death for heresy in order to capture their wealth. The Grand Master cursed Philip and his line as he was going to be executed. He perished not long after, along with some of his conspirators, as well as his three sons and grandson (he died in 1314, and all of his descendants died by 1328). The Capetian line came to an end at that point. Philip’s last kid was a woman who married the King of England. The French nobility cited Salic law, which barred women from inheriting the throne (and so barred her son, Edward III, from inheriting through her) and placed a male on the throne. The kingdom of England declared war on France’s throne.
Thus the Hundred Years’ War started.
