The National Assembly has approved an increase in the salary of President Jacob Zuma. 172 members of the National Assembly voted in favour of the increase, while 81 voted against it and two members abstained.
The acting chief whip of the African National Congress (ANC), Doris Dlakude, read out a resolution that – in terms of the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act – the President’s salary will be just over R 2.8 million a year.
According to Dlakude, “Having due regard to the criteria listed in the subsection determines that the salary payable to the President of the Republic of South Africa shall be R2 874 851 with effect from 1 April 2016.”
Before approving the resolution, opposition parties including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were among those who objected.
DA Member of Parliament (MP) Sej Motau says, “In light of reckless actions in December, the effect on South Africa’s economy shall remain unchanged.”
While EFF MP Sam Matiase says, “The salary payable to the President should be suspended indefinitely after he admitted to have benefited unduly and (he) does not deserve increment or adjustment.”
