Supermoon Photography Tips from a Welsh Astrophotographer

Capture the Night Sky

The night sky beckons with its celestial wonders, and a supermoon rising on Monday night presents the perfect opportunity to capture its magic. But how do you get started with astrophotography, especially if you’re new to venturing out under the stars?

Dafydd Wynn Morgans, a Welsh astrophotographer who thrives under the dark skies of the Cambrian Mountains, shares his top tips for capturing breathtaking night sky photos:

Embrace the Darkness:

  • Seek Out Dark Skies: Light pollution is the enemy of astrophotography. Head to a location with minimal light interference. Remember, “Only in the darkness can you see the stars,” says Dafydd.
  • Plan and Prepare: Choose a safe and accessible location. Let someone know your plans and bring essentials like a warm drink to stay alert. This isn’t a casual stroll; planning ensures a successful (and safe) night.
  • Respect the Local Community: If you’re venturing into remote areas, inform nearby residents of your presence. Dafydd learned this the hard way when a red head torch (used to preserve night vision) caused a police visit, mistaking it for a late-night gathering!

Befriend the Night Sky:

  • Get to Know the Stars: Familiarize yourself with what’s visible in the night sky. There are plenty of stargazing apps to help you identify constellations and celestial events. Understanding the sky will guide your photography decisions.
  • Embrace Comfort: Pack warm clothes and a comfortable blanket. Lie down and gaze upwards – it’s a more relaxing and cinematic way to appreciate the cosmos.

Capture the Moment (Even with your Phone!):

  • Start Simple with Your Phone: You don’t need fancy equipment to get started. Modern smartphones have surprisingly powerful camera technology that can capture stunning images of the stars, Milky Way, moon, and even the aurora borealis.
  • Steady Does It: Use a tripod to keep your camera or phone perfectly still. A shaky camera results in blurry photos.
  • Experiment with Settings: Most smartphones offer a “pro” mode where you can adjust exposure and ISO. Increasing these settings allows more light in, capturing the faint details of the night sky.

Beyond the Basics:

  • Invest in Advanced Equipment: As your passion for astrophotography grows, consider investing in a camera with a good lens, a sturdy tripod, a remote control for shutter release, and a headlamp with a red light setting.
  • Double-Check Your Gear: Before heading out, always double-check your equipment. Dafydd once traveled for three hours only to discover he’d forgotten the memory cards!

Embrace the Journey:

Astrophotography is more than just capturing a picture; it’s an experience. Immerse yourself in the darkness, appreciate the beauty of the cosmos, and enjoy the process. Remember, with a little planning and these helpful tips, you can capture the magic of the night sky, even with your phone!
