Dirk Rozich Captures LeBron James’ Legacy on Canvas”
In a moment of artistic awe, Stark County painter Dirk Rozich found himself immersed in the creation of a trio of 28-by-20 inch paintings depicting the global sports icon, LeBron James. Little did he know, these paintings would soon become larger-than-life murals adorning the walls of the LeBron James’ Home Court museum at House Three Thirty in Akron.
As Rozich delicately worked on his masterpieces, each stroke carried the weight of portraying the legendary basketball player in a manner befitting his celebrity status and the significance of the museum. “Finishing the first painting was very emotional; that’s when it dawned on me what I was doing. There was a little bit of intimidation because it is LeBron James,” Rozich admitted.
Originally tasked with creating a mural for the facility’s parking deck, Rozich’s exceptional artistry, including a commissioned portrait of former President George W. Bush, caught the attention of the LeBron James Foundation. Impressed, they invited him to produce an elaborate mural inside the museum.
Motivated by the foundation’s community-driven mission, Rozich voluntarily contributed his skills to the project. “Sometimes the work is more important than the paycheck, and this was definitely one of those projects,” he affirmed.
House Three Thirty, a multi-use facility associated with the I Promise School, opened its doors in late November. Rozich’s murals, titled “The Kid. The King. The One,” vividly portray different periods in LeBron James’ life, welcoming visitors at the entrance to the LeBron James museum.
Nicholas Lopez, creative director for the LeBron James Family Foundation, emphasized the importance of House Three Thirty as a reflection of James’ commitment to Akron and Northeast Ohio. “This is a place to be inspired and dream big and reimagine how you can do things not only in your home but in your business (and) in your community,” Lopez stated.
Rozich, a full-time artist since 2014, specializes in realistic illustration. His portfolio includes NFL-themed outdoor installations in downtown Canton, further showcasing his artistic prowess. For the LeBron museum mural, Rozich meticulously selected and recreated over 100 photographs representing different milestones in James’ life and career.
The intense chroma and lifelike details in the murals were achieved through watercolor wash with acrylic paint overtop, involving multiple layers of thinned paint. The 14 portraits of LeBron were painted with precision and passion.
Despite challenges, such as reproducing smaller artwork on a grand scale and basing imagery on early, lower-resolution photos of LeBron, Rozich overcame each obstacle with artistic finesse. The paintings were professionally photographed, digitally scanned, enlarged, and printed on vinyl, ultimately adorning three walls leading to the LeBron museum.
In capturing LeBron James’ legacy on canvas, Dirk Rozich has not only left his mark on the House Three Thirty complex but has also etched a visual narrative of a sports icon’s journey for all to admire.
