Today was dedicated to transforming a blank canvas into a functional and stylish space. The focus was on creating a foundation for the room’s aesthetic – curtain poles and shelves.
First up, the curtain pole. I started by carefully measuring and marking the center point above the window, ensuring precision for the perfect placement. The brackets were next, measured, marked, and securely fastened to the wall using rawlplugs and screws. With the brackets in place, the curtain pole was effortlessly slid through, and the curtain rings were added. A small detail to consider: for those using a single curtain like me, placing a curtain ring at each end of the pole on the bracket’s exterior prevents the curtain from drifting across the window. The finishing touch was adding the finials, secured with a bit of glue for extra stability.
Next, I turned my attention to the shelving. My plan was to maximize the alcove to the left of the chimney breast. Accuracy was key, so I diligently measured, marked, and used a spirit level to ensure everything was perfectly aligned. After drilling the holes for the rawlplugs, I discovered a handy tip: wiggling a screw in the hole removes any plaster dust, making it easier for the plugs to fit snugly. A gentle tap with a rubber mallet secured the plugs without damaging the wallpaper. The shelves were then cut to size and pinned into place, with additional support beams added for stability.
To complete the look, I hung a small shelf between the windows. This will be the first of two, creating a balanced display once the second is in place. I’ll be sure to share pictures of the final result.
The room is gradually taking shape, and I’m feeling a sense of accomplishment. With the flooring, beading, and final casing installations on the horizon, the finishing line is in sight. The prospect of decorating and furnishing this space is incredibly exciting.
It’s been a productive day, filled with small victories and a growing sense of satisfaction. Each step brings me closer to realizing my vision for this room. Stay tuned for more updates as the transformation continues!
