February 6, 2013 – Happy Birthday, Bob Marley

n

nFebruarynis “Black History Month.” It is still important to deliberatelynfocus on the role played by women and “minority groups” innhistory, since much of the traditionally-told American and Europeannhistory focuses on white men.

nHistorynclasses also pay more attention to generals and presidents and kingsninstead of artists and scientists and musicians. We often learn thenhistory of rulers and warriors rather than the history of those whonmade huge contributions to our everyday lives and culture.

nIt’sninteresting to listen to the language used Jamaica. Long ago, thenslaves who were brought to this Caribbean island spoke a wide variety ofnAfrican languages. In order to communicate with each other, they allnhad to learn English. But English didn’t have words for some of thenplants, animals, foods, and other things in their environment, so thenslaves used words borrowed from their African languages for thosenthings. The resulting language is called a creole language. Note:nJamaican is not “more primitive” or “less grammatical” thannother forms of English—but the vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar are differentnthan those found in other English dialects.
