n

nWhatndo you suppose “South-South Cooperation” means?

n

n
n

n

nApparently, nit is supposed to add to the North-South Cooperation that has alreadynbeen established: developed countries in the Northern Hemispherenreaching out to help nations that are still developing modernneconomies in the Southern Hemisphere.

n

n
n

n

nAlthoughnthere are definitely some highly developed economies in the South!

n

n

n

nAustralia and New Zealand spring to mind!

n

n

n

nHow about Argentina?

n

n
n

n

nAtnany rate, there does seem to be a lot of Northern-centrism. We almostnalways see photos, maps, and globes with the Northern Hemispherenabove the Southern Hemisphere—but since the world is a sphere, itncould be pictured South-side up half the time. Also, on this blog, Intalk more about December being Winter than I do about December beingnSummer, as it is in the Southern Hemisphere. Why am I so stuck withnN.H. goggles?

n

n
n

n

nWell, for one thing, Inlive in the U.S., firmly in the Northern Hemisphere. n

n

nAnd for another thing, ncheck out these stats:

n

n
n

n

nAbout two-thirds of thenEarth’s landmass is in the Northern Hemisphere.

n

n
n

n

nThere are about 166nnations in the Northern Hemisphere, compared to only about 29 in thenSouth.

n

n
n

n

nAnd—get this!—aboutn90% of all humans live in the Northern Hemisphere!

n

n
n

n

n
n

n

nCannyou name two continents that are entirely in the Southern Hemisphere?

n

nWhatnis the only Asian nation that is (partly) in the Southern Hemisphere?

n

nIsnSouth America mostly in the Southern Hemisphere or the NorthernnHemisphere? How about Africa?

n

n
n

n

nToncheck your answers, grab a world map or globe!
