nNickelodeonnis sponsoring a Worldwide Day of Play to celebrate what we play, whynwe play, and how we play. Nick is offering a huge free event atnProspect Park in Brooklyn (a really large, really great park!), withneverything from football and tennis to dancing and double-dutchnjumprope. There’s free water, concerts, and a Nick Jr. Zone—andnloads of activities from partner organizations such as the YMCA, thenNBA, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

nDidnyou know that play is really important? It is one of the best waysnthat mammals learn whatever they need to know.

n

n

n

nYoung lions learnnhunting skills by playing at sneaking up on others and pouncing;nyoung zebras learn how to escape dangers by playing chase games.

n

n

n

n

n

nHumans have to learn more than any other creature—and we learn manynthings best in freely-chosen play activities!

n
nWatch babies turn mealntime into a game of drop-the-spoon. (They’re not being ornery, theynare trying to figure out how gravity works!) Watch toddlers play bynmoving things, stacking things, threading things, pushingnthings—learning how the world works, and practicing hand-eyencoordination. Listen to little kids learning language by playingnrhyming games and babbling silly sounds. Older kids playing a pick-upngame of basketball or kickball are learning all sorts of things aboutnforces and momentum, and they are also learning how to get along, hownto negotiate rules—lots of stuff!

n

nRemember, nit’s not really play unless you are choosing it – and unless youncan always choose to quit playing. Free play, pretend play, game playn– do it all today!
