nPostednNovember 6, 2013

n

n

nWouldnyou like to visit Pushkar, India, alongside hundreds of thousands ofnpeople and thousands of camels, cattle, and horses? n

n

n

n

nWouldnyou like to stay in a luxury tented camp as you smell and taste, hearnand see, and experience all the varied cultural offerings? Ornperhaps you would rather stay in one of the hotels tucked betweennbazaars and cafes in the medieval town.

n

n

n

n

n

nWhethernit’s going to the Pushkar Lake to watch the buying, selling, andntrading of livestock, or it’s browsing the stalls full of fabrics andnclothing, jewelry and trinkets, handicrafts of all sorts—thenPushkar Camel Fair promises to be a lively spot!

n

n

n

nAsidenfrom all of that, there are processions and parades, contests such asnthe Longest Mustache Contest, races, exhibits, cricket exhibitions, nand fairground rides. Of course there is music and dancing and goodnfood! Many visitors bathe in the lake, which is said to be holy, andnthere are religious festivities on the last day (which, in 2013, isnon November 17).

n

n

n

nThis video gives you a nice taste of the Pushkar Camel Fair. (It wouldnbe even nicer if you could actually taste the food in the video!)

nOnenHump or Two?

n

n

n

nThenkind of camels traded in this Northern Indian fair are calledndromedary camels. They have one hump, live in drier, sandiernlocations, and have shorter hair than the other variety, thentwo-humped Bactrian camels. n

n

n

n

nWhichnsort of camel do you think has bushy eyebrows and two rows of thickneyelashes to protect from blowing sand? Which has wide feet withncushion-like pads to make it easier to walk on loose sand or rockynterrain? Which can go from days to weeks without food or water?

n

n

n

nIfnyou answered “both of them.” good for you! Both dromedaries andnBactrians have these adaptations that help them live in the harshndesert environment.
