nDonyou know Carlo Lorenzini? He was born on this date in 1826; he wasnpoor, and he was considered a bit wild—even a “terror”—asna child in school. During the Italian wars of independence, Lorenzininserved in the Tuscan army. But he is famous for being an author undernthe pen name Carlo Collodi.

n

n

n

nHenwrote novels and short stories for adults. He wrote satiricalnsketches. You probably don’t know them.

n

n

n

nBut perhapsnyou have heard of one of his children’s fairy tales? A little storyncalled ThenAdventures of Pinocchio?

n

n

n

n

n

nLorenzininliked the idea of using a character to act out his ideas in a formnthat is known as “allegory.” In an allegory, various characters, nplaces, and events are symbolic of something else. Lorenzini wrotenPinocchio as a series of tales printed each week in the first Italiannnewspaper for children, IlnGiomale per I Bambini.nn

n

n

n

nFortunately, nthe tales were immediately popular, and they were published in booknform. The book was a great success. Unfortunately, Lorenzini (ornCollodi) died just seven years after its publication, and the authornhad no idea that his marionette would go on to become one of the mostniconic and beloved characters in the world. A huge part of the spreadnof Pinocchio was surely the Disney movie of that name. However, therenhave been many other adaptations, including feature films and TVnmusicals and stop-motion animations and even an opera! n

n

n

n

nPinocchio’snstory has been translated into many different languages and hasninspired other books and movies such as Pinocchio in Venice andnPinocchio’s Revenge. The character sometimes makes appearances innother works such as the Shrek movies.
