n

nAnlot of famous Americans in show biz – whether they are Broadwaynsingers / songwriters or movie actors, TV stars or big-screenndirectors – ARE American, but are NOT born in the U.S. Instead, nthese North Americans are (or were) from Canada.

n

n

n

nTodaynis the birthday of several of these talented Canadians who have madenit big on both sides of the border. n

n

n

n

nCobienSmulders just finished up her long-time TV role in the popular HownI Met Your Mother. (Nine years! Yep, that’s a long run!) She isnalso in the Captain America movie that just came out a couple ofnweeks ago. Born on this date in 1982, Smulders grew up in Vancouver,nBritish Columbia, but now lives in Los Angeles, California. “Cobie”nis her family nickname; her birth name is Jacoba Francisca MarianSmulders! That’s a lot of syllables!

Sebastian Bach is the one who ISN’T
Johnny Depp

n

nSebastiannBach is not the super-famous German composer of classical musicn(that’s Johann Sebastian Bach), but he is a singer /nsongwriter as well as an actor. In addition to playing heavy metal, nhard rock, glam metal, country rock, and thrash metal, he’s also donenBroadway and TV! He was born on this date in 1968. And he currentlynlives in Beverly Hills, right next to LA, here in California.

nNownon to some oldies-but-goodies: Allan Dwan, born in Toronto on thisndate in 1885, became a pioneering motion picture director, producer, nand screenwriter, back when movies were brand new. He operated one ofnthe first movie studios in Southern California, and he eventuallyndied in Los Angeles.

n

n

n

nAndnMargaret Anglin, born on this date in 1876 in Ottawa, is considerednone of the most brilliant actresses of her day. She never lived in LAn– the only one of the Canadians I have written about here whondidn’t – but she did live in NYC, and she became a U.S. citizennthrough marriage. Anglin knew about motion pictures, but she refusednto sacrifice her art for those new-fangled things! Instead, she was anBroadway actress, director, and producer. n
